“This series was drawn out from my first encounter of Berlin, Germany and all its glory and history. I painted the figures as if they stand there in front of the viewer totally being who they are, lit up by life and being someone going for it fully, unapologetically.” – Maggie José
‘I Am Blue’ is part of Maggie José’s ‘I Am’ series.
Attired in his loosely cut conventional suit, the male figure yields to his portrait, his face hidden from view by a color associated with some of our deepest emotions.
Color and typography are in dialogue at the core of an identity masked yet on also on display. Beyond language, color consumes our perceptual field. Language, on the other hand, marks the construction of a self, here summarized in a simple yet powerful declaration of personal territory.
The blue color, vivid and basic, represents the world as a magic grid of infinite possibilities and mental transformations out of which new versions of our selves can emerge.
